Tips for keeping your baby cool during hot weather

As temperatures rise, it’s essential to ensure your baby stays cool and comfortable to prevent overheating, which can lead to heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Here are some effective tips to help keep your baby cool during hot days:

Dress them in light, breathable clothing: opt for loose-fitting clothes made from lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton. Avoid overdressing your baby, as layers trap heat. A simple onesie or a light singlet and shorts can keep them comfortable.

Keep your baby hydrated: babies can become dehydrated more quickly than adults, so it’s essential to keep them hydrated. For babies younger than six months, increase their breastfeeding or formula-feeding frequency. For older babies, offer them small sips of water regularly throughout the day.

Create a cool sleeping environment: During naps or bedtime, ensure the room is well-ventilated. Use a fan to circulate the air, but avoid pointing it directly at your baby. You can also use a light, breathable swaddle or a sleep sack instead of a heavy blanket.

Use cooling accessories: invest in cooling accessories for your baby, such as cooling gel pads for strollers or portable fans. These can help regulate their body temperature when you’re out and about. Additionally, ensure your baby’s car seat is cool before placing them inside, as car seats can trap heat.

Limit outdoor exposure: The hottest part of the day, typically between 10a.m and 4p.m, can be dangerous for your baby. Try to limit outdoor activities during these hours. If you must be outside, find a shaded area and protect your baby with a wide-brimmed hat or an umbrella.

Keep skin cool with damp cloths: gently pat your baby’s skin with a cool, damp cloth to help lower their body temperature. Pay special attention to areas like neck, underarms and behind the knees. You can also give your baby a lukewarm bath before bedtime to cool them down.

Monitor for signs of overheating: be on the lookout for symptoms of overheating, such as:

  • Flushed cheeks
  • Sweating
  • Rapid breathing
  • Restlessness
  • Irritability…….if you notice any of these signs, take immediate steps to cool your baby down by moving them to a cooler spot, offering fluids and loosening their clothing.

Keep the stroller cool

When taking your baby out in the stroller, cover the seat with a light, breathable cloth or use a specially designed stroller shade to block direct sunlight. Be cautious not to use a thick blanket that could trap heat inside the stroller.

By following these tips, you can help ensure your baby remains safe, comfortable and cool during hot weather.
